The Top Tap Water Contaminants In The US In 2022

4 minute read

Tainted tap water is not just a problem in Flint, Michigan. It could be closer to home than you think. Drinking water contaminants pose harm to public health. Some can cause immediate illness, such as the 16 million cases of acute gastroenteritis that occur each year at US community water systems. A recent study with data collected from the EPA showed that  health-based drinking water quality violations are widespread, with 9–45 million people possibly affected over the past 34 years. Organizations like the Environmental Working Group have been tracking contaminants in the water supply and created a Tap water database for easier public consumption.

What is EWG’s Tap Water Database

The Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) 2021 Tap Water Database collects mandatory annual test reports from 2014 to 2019, produced by almost 50,000 water utilities in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This one-of-a-kind tool has provided information on how widespread contamination from toxic substances such as arsenic, lead, and the “forever chemicals” known as PFAS in the drinking water of tens of millions of households. EWG has been collecting and analyzing tap water quality data since 2003. EWG’s drinking water quality database includes a total of nearly 31 million test results for 534 chemicals, 324 of which were detected in drinking water, making it the largest resource of free and openly accessible data on U.S. drinking water. Consumers can enter their ZIP code into the tap water database and see a report of toxic contaminants in the area’s drinking water as well as safety assessments put together by EWG scientists. In many areas, various dangerous contaminants have been uncovered in water samples, although they were still in compliance with federal health-based drinking water standards.

Top Contaminants Detected in Tap Water

Some of the top contaminants found in tap water include LEAD –  The most famous bad guy, Lead is a toxic metal that can cause damage to health even at low doses. Lead in drinking water can cause a variety of adverse health effects. CHLORINE TREATMENT BY-PRODUCTS: Chemicals used in drinking water’s disinfection process, such as trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids, may cause cancer and reproductive problems if present in high quantities. ATRAZINE –   This endocrine-disrupting chemical is one of the most commonly detected pesticides in U.S. waters.  This herbicide is commonly used on golf courses and in the farming of corn. It can interfere with the body’s hormonal activity and reproductive organs. The EWG has a list of every contaminant found in tap water nationwide. It can be viewed here.

What to do to prevent Contaminants in Tap Water
Go filtered.  Although your basic carbon filters, found in pitchers and faucet-mounted devices, are an effective way to significantly reduce contaminants, they’re not going to get rid of everything. But, filtration systems offer your own personal autonomy. A portable water purifier, such as the GOpure Pod, has been shown to remove high percentages of harmful contaminants while preserving the presence of beneficial minerals and ions. It goes where other water purifiers and filters can’t go: every faucet, sink, spigot, hose, drinking fountain, in every neighborhood, town, city, and country.

Contaminants in regular tap water are neutralized in seconds, and the pH balance is adjusted for optimal hydration. Unlike carbon water filters, which operate just once, our technology works continually through a natural process known as an ionic exchange to keep clean water fresh and delicious for months. Every drop of water from every potable source is now safe to drink everywhere you go with a GOpure Pod.

How does it work?
Every GOpure Pod is powered by an infinite and renewable resource that Mother Nature has relied on for over 20 million years. It is known as diatomaceous earth (DE). When you drop the GOpure Pod into tap water, millions of microscopic pores go to work. Every Pod features an advanced ceramic core made from DE and trace silver that performs like a magnet to continuously attract, bind and adsorb every heavy metal, inorganic, bacteria, impure chemical, and more while releasing valuable trace minerals. This simple, inexpensive solution helps with cleaner, tastier, and more drinkable water. Learn more when you visit our website.
